Strength and conditioning for young athletes in Bristol

One-to-one coaching designed to develop strength, power and good movement, planned around your child's sport, their training and where they are in their growth.

60 minutes · One to one · At their own gym

Who it's for

For young athletes who want to get stronger the right way

You might be here because…

  • Your child wants to start in the gym and you'd like someone to teach them properly
  • They're already lifting, but nobody is checking their technique or how much they're doing
  • They've had a growth spurt and suddenly feel clumsy, stiff or slower
  • Their club doesn't have an S&C coach, or the squad sessions can't give them individual attention
  • They've got a trial, selection or big season coming up and want to be physically ready
  • They've had a K Performance assessment and want help working on their priorities

Starting out

Teaching the basics properly: squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, jumping and landing. Technique first, then load.

Training seriously

For athletes already in a club programme who want individual strength and power work that fits around their sport, not on top of it.

Adults welcome

Most of the athletes I coach are 12–18, but if you're an adult who wants structured strength coaching, get in touch.

What happens in a session

60 minutes, one to one, built around your child.

Check

A quick check-in first

Each session starts with a quick check-in: how they're feeling, what training they've done that week, and any niggles. Before the first session we go through a short health questionnaire so I know training is appropriate for them. If they're tired or sore, the plan changes for that day.

Train

Coached, one to one

A proper warm-up, then technique and strength work, plus jumping, landing and speed where it fits their sport. Planning takes into account their training experience, their technique and their stage of growth, and sessions progress when they're ready.

Next

What happens between sessions

Clear notes on what we worked on and what to do before next time, sent to parents after each session. I'm happy to talk to their club coach so everything fits together.

Safety first

When training isn't the right first step

I'm a coach, not a medic, and I won't diagnose. If your child has any of these, please see your GP, a physiotherapist or NHS 111 before they start:

  • • pain that is getting worse, keeps them awake at night, or stops them doing everyday things
  • • pain or swelling after a fall, collision or other injury
  • • a limp, or pain around a knee, heel or hip that doesn't settle with rest
  • • chest pain, dizziness, fainting or unusual breathlessness during exercise (if it happens during a session, see the emergency box)
  • • any condition their doctor has asked them to be careful with when exercising

If they're already working with a physio, I'm happy to follow their advice and work alongside them.

In an emergency, call 999

If someone has chest pain, collapses, faints or has severe difficulty breathing during exercise, or has any other serious injury, the session stops straight away, 999 is called and they're not left alone while we wait. For anything that seems urgent but not life-threatening, call NHS 111.

£45 per session

Weekly 60-minute coaching over 8 or 12 weeks, so new skills have time to bed in and strength can build step by step.

Single session

One-off session

£50

Other options

Shorter and shared sessions

45 minutes, £40: for younger athletes who suit a shorter session.

Pairs, £30 each: two athletes of similar age and ability, such as siblings, crew-mates or training partners.

  • Where: at your child's own gym or training facility. I don't have my own gym.
  • Travel: included within roughly 20 minutes of Leigh Woods. A £10 supplement applies further away.
  • Gym fees: if the gym charges a guest or coach fee, the family pays it.
  • Block sessions are used within 10 weeks (8-week block) or 14 weeks (12-week block), which leaves room for holidays, illness and competitions.
  • Cancellations: to cancel or move a session, email me as early as you can. Sessions cancelled or moved with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full, except in a genuine emergency such as illness or injury on the day.
  • Payment: blocks are paid upfront or monthly in advance. One-off sessions are paid on the day.
  • Adults pay the same prices.

Young athletes

Coaching for under-18s

Most of the athletes I coach are under 18, so the same standards apply in every session. A parent or guardian books, gives written consent before the first session, and stays for the whole of every session where they can see it. I explain what we're working on, and why, to both of you. The young person can ask questions, say if something doesn't feel right, or stop at any time, and if they want to stop, we stop.

How it works

  • • A parent or guardian books and gives written consent before the first session
  • • A parent or guardian stays for the whole of every session, where they can see it
  • • Sessions take place in an open gym space, never behind a closed door
  • • Session arrangements and updates go to parents, not to young athletes directly
  • • Hands-on coaching cues are only used when needed, explained first, and only with the young person's agreement
  • • Enhanced DBS checked (including the children's barred list) and British Rowing safeguarding trained

I've coached young athletes for over seven years, including as lead strength & conditioning coach at City of Bristol Rowing Club, working with 12–18-year-olds through full training seasons. I know how much young athletes are already asked to do, so I'd rather do a few things really well than pile more on.
